Laras-laris is possibly unique in Europe in that we specialise in 'Cokekan' music; the street wise, lively music that is ubiquitous at                 celebrations across Central Java. This music is focused on the rich and varied vocal repertoire of Java. The ensemble traditionally features   only the soft style instruments of the gamelan, with the Sindhen or female soloist as leader and a small gang of men who shout, sing, clap     and generally have a good time. The overall effect is that of a musical party of infectious melody and hi energy as the players let rip

All the players in Laras-laris have spent at least two years on scholarships studying and performing Gamelan in the Conservatoire and         villages of Central Java. All are players in the highly acclaimed South Bank Gamelan Players and as such have performed extensively           across the UK and Europe. However they are the only group regularly playing this exciting and highly skilled genre which has yet to be       experienced on mainland Europe.

Central to 'Cokekan' is the role of the 'Sindhen' or female vocalist. 'Laras-laris' are fortunate enough to work with Esther Wilds one of the   worlds leading non-Javanese sindhen. Esther studied for three years in Solo during which time she soon became a frequent and much         sought after singer on the wayang kulit circuit. She has worked (to much acclaim) with many of Indonesia's leading Dhalang; Ki Manthep     Sudarsono, Ki Enthus Susmono and Ki Purbo Asmoro, to name a few. She was, during her time in Java, a regular professional performer   on radio and TV throughout Indonesia.
